With the 2021 AMA E&M changes, NAMAS will require that all those who hold the CEMA or CEMA-O credential to re-certify. Additional information regarding this update can be found within this webpage.

Why is NAMAS making all credentialed CEMA’s recertify?

In order to maintain the CEMA and CEMA-O certification, those certified will be required to demonstrate proficiency in the AMA 2021 E&M Guidelines. These NAMAS credentials are based on Evaluation & Management services, and due to the extensive updates to the guidelines, proficiency in this new way of auditing is necessary.
Recertifying provides useful validation of your proficiency in the new guidelines which is useful to substantiate your knowledge base through precision scoring and the act of recertifying a useful employer notification.

What happens if I do not recertify?

If you do not recertify prior to December 31, 2021, your CEMA credential will be moved to inactive status.

How will recertification affect my CEUs required for maintenance of my credential?

Taking and passing the recertification exam satisfies CEU requirements for your next renewal year.

Note: You will still be required to maintain an active NAMAS membership as a component of renewing your CEMA credential.

How can I prepare for recertification?

Throughout 2020 and 2021, NAMAS will be offering additional education on the upcoming changes for E/M services, including:

What does the recertification exam consist of?

The recertification exam will model the same format as when you initially certified. You will receive 10 sample patient E/M encounters which you will need to audit and answer 10 questions regarding each encounter. Note: When recertifying, you will need to audit the encounters and answers the questions related to your audit findings under the 2021 guidance for E/M services.

What happens if I do not pass the recertification exam?

In line with our certification process, you will receive 1 complimentary retake opportunity if you do not receive a passing score of 70% or higher on the recertification exam.

What if I did not originally pass the CEMA exam? How can I earn the CEMA credential?

If you did not pass the CEMA exam initially, we welcome you to take the 2021 exam at any time. Upon receiving a passing score of 70% or higher, you will earn the Certified Evaluation & Management Auditor (CEMA) credential.
