In healthcare, compliance, auditing, and coding roles, professionals are often reduced to job titles on a resume. The resume captures tasks, timelines, and credentials, but not the person behind the workload. How can you show your full professional identity alongside those perfected resume bullet points?
Your professional identity includes how you think, how you solve problems, how you teach, how you lead, and how you show up in complex situations. It’s the full, multidimensional picture of who you are as a professional. It’s the combination of your values, behaviors, strengths, communication style, leadership tendencies, and the way you manage your responsibilities.
In healthcare, auditing, coding, and compliance roles, people often get boxed into narrow labels:
- “coder”
- “auditor”
- “educator”
- “billing specialist”
- “compliance person”
But your professional identity determines:
- how you communicate with providers
- how you navigate regulatory ambiguity
- how you lead without authority
- how you adapt to AI‑driven workflows
- how you advocate for documentation integrity
- how you grow into new roles
It’s the difference between “I audit charts” and “I strengthen organizational integrity.”
A resume is necessary document but limited. It captures surface-level facts, not your values, leadership style, communication strengths, reputation, influence, adaptability, teaching ability, emotional intelligence, strategic thinking, or professional standards. I often say your career is the movie, but your resume is only the trailer. The point of the trailer is to garner enough interest to have somebody (a recruiter or hiring manager) to buy a ticket to see your movie.
Expanding your identity is essential for career mobility, confidence, and influence. You can start by taking on new responsibilities and collaborating across departments. You can mentor others, write articles (thank you, NAMAS!), present at local and national conferences, and develop a personal brand.
Career growth is the ongoing expansion of your skills, influence, and professional identity over time. It’s not just moving from one job title to another. As your career grows, you will become more capable, more visible, and more valuable in your field. Growth is an evolution of your professional identity, including developing new skills, taking on new responsibilities, contributing in new and exciting ways to your organization, and creating new opportunities. Advancement is a new title (and those are great!) but career growth is becoming someone new. Growth can happen even if your title never changes.
Career growth can come from:
- expanding your knowledge (coding, auditing, regulatory interpretation)
- taking classes and additional certifications (NAMAS training, AAPC courses, AHIMA Academy, HCPro, Coursera, edX, BC Magazine, Epic Training Modules, MGMA Education, HFMA Courses, Toastmasters, LinkedIn Learning, Udemy)
- strengthening your communication (provider education, conflict navigation)
- building leadership behaviors (influence, mentoring, collaboration)
- adapting to industry change (AI, MACRA/MIPS, VBC, documentation integrity)
- developing a personal brand (what you’re known for)
- increasing your visibility (presentations, articles, chapter involvement)
You might be reading this today and think, “Sure, Sarah. This all sounds great, but this requires ME to change. And change is SCARY!” To that I say, “Yes, yes it is. You know what’s scarier? Being stagnant. Feeling stuck. Wondering what *could* have happened, if only you’d had the chutzpah to try something new.”
Identity expansion isn’t just empowering, it’s deeply uncomfortable. It isn’t smooth or linear. When you begin to expand your professional identity, you will probably experience self-doubt, imposter syndrome, fear of visibility, fear of being wrong, fear of stepping “outside your lane”, and worry. This discomfort is normal, and proof that you are growing. It feels painful because we are having to let go of old labels and stepping into roles you’ve never held before. You will see yourself in a new light and take on responsibilities that will stretch your skillset. You’ll find yourself speaking up in rooms where you used to sit quietly. And this shift can feel like you’re standing on the edge of a cliff on a very windy day.
Every meaningful career leap includes a moment where you think:
“What if I’m not good enough for this?”
“What if I’m stepping too far outside my comfort zone?”
“What if people don’t take me seriously?”
“What if I fail?”
This is not a sign you’re doing the wrong thing. It’s a sign you’re doing the next thing.
Growth always feels like misalignment before it feels like expansion. Growth feels uncomfortable because you’re stepping into a version of yourself you haven’t met yet. But that discomfort is temporary, and the identity you gain is permanent. It cannot be taken away from you. This identity expansion isn’t about abandoning who you are. It’s about widening the lens. It’s about recognizing that your skills, your knowledge, and your value extend far beyond one credential or one job title. It’s about stepping into the full scope of your professional capability.
Identity expansion is also deeply personal. It requires honesty. It requires reflection. And sometimes, it requires letting go of narratives that no longer serve you. You cannot grow professionally if your identity stays small.
When you allow your identity to expand, you open the door to new certifications, new roles, new responsibilities, and new levels of influence. You become someone who doesn’t just do the work, but someone who understands it, teaches it, improves it, and elevates it.
Identity expansion is not a one‑time event. It’s a continuous process. And in the coding community, it’s one of the most powerful tools we have for building resilient, future‑ready professionals.
If you’re feeling the pull toward something bigger, such as a new credential, a new specialty, a new challenge, pay attention. That’s your identity asking to grow.
Let it.
Identity expansion is not about becoming someone different. It’s about becoming more fully yourself. The healthcare industry needs professionals who are willing to grow, stretch, and redefine what their roles can be. If you feel that pull toward something bigger, trust it. Your next chapter is waiting for you to step into it. And personally? I can’t wait to see you do it.
